Italia 1 was created by the publisher Edilio Rusconi and began broadcasting its program on January 3, 1982 on eighteen local broadcasters (the main one being Antenna Nord in Milan) in order to build up a national broadcasting network. On September 6 of the same year, Rusconi signed a collaboration agreement with Silvio Berlusconi, owner of Canale 5, and a few months later, the Fininvest group definitively took control of the chain.
