CCTV-1 is the leading national television channel in the People's Republic of China. It belongs to the network of the Central Television of China (in Mandarin 中国 中央 电视台, in English CCTV for China Central Television), a company dependent on the Council of State of the People's Republic of China, one of the main governmental authorities of the country .

If the first experiments on Chinese television took place on May 1, 1958, it was only a few months later, on September 2, that the first regular broadcasts could finally begin under the name of “China Television”. On May 1, 1978, “Chine Télévision” officially became “CCTV”. It was then the only national television channel, broadcasting general and educational programs during part of the day, the antenna closing intervening at midnight. Joined by a second channel in the 1980s, then by a host of thematic channels in the years that followed, CCTV-1 remains the main general-interest television channel for state television.
