KNTV was launched on September 12, 1955 as an independent station which originally covered the western part between Monterey (California) and San Francisco, its antenna was located in Loma Prieta, 100 km south of San Francisco. It also broadcast programs from CBS, DuMont and NBC that were not broadcast by local stations on these networks in San Francisco. In 1960, after making changes to cover mainly Montrey, it joined the ABC network.
